When it comes to combustion technology and control, Karl Dungs is a name that has been synonymous with quality, safety and innovation for a long time.

Founded in 1945 after the second world war as an electrical installation company by Karl Dungs, the mid-sized, family-owned business has steadily grown into a designer and manufacturer of fully integrated solutions for heating, gas engines and the process heat industry.

With seven production plants and a global network spanning all gas consuming countries globally, the leading German combustion control systems maker is focused on Asia-Pacific – where it is present in China, India, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, Singapore, Thailand, Australia and New Zealand.

Innovation is key to our success. We define state-of-the-art industry standards because of our engineering capabilitiesKarl Dungs, CEO

In 2016 and 2017, the company opened subsidiaries in India and in Japan. Its highest regional priority is China – a country transitioning from coal to natural gas amid stricter air quality requirements – and where the company has been present for more than 20 years. Karl Dungs opened an office in Shanghai in 2006 and plans on developing products tailor-made for the Chinese market.

“Innovation is key to our success,” says Karl Dungs, son and namesake of the founder, and the company’s second-generation CEO. “We define state-of-the-art industry standards because of our engineering capabilities. As a member of various international standards organisations, we also help develop these regulations. Our colleagues are engineers, and so we are able to strongly influence the standards of tomorrow.”

A pioneer responsible for the world’s first fully automated electronic gas burner control for forced draught gas burners, Karl Dungs offers a complete range of hardware and software technologies for controlling, securing and modulating combustible gas and combustion air.

Its portfolio of innovative, durable, safe and user-friendly products range from single valves, pressure regulators and switches, complete gas systems and automatic burner controls to complete burner management systems.

Applications of Karl Dungs products include commercial heating, industrial process heating used in food production, steel making, the production of metal, glass and ceramics and power generation. The company’s products are approved for worldwide use, meeting five major differentiations in safety equipment standards across Europe, the United States, Australia, Russia and Ukraine.

Karl Dungs is also an original equipment manufacturer for forced draught burners, condensing floor standing boilers, premix burners, gas engines and industrial process heat installations.

“Being a systems integrator is our speciality,” Dungs says. “Our experience allows us to create a whole system out of the box that a customer can build upon. We have many solutions that simultaneously meet international standard requirements because of our worldwide network.”

Karl Dungs takes an adaptable, innovative and interdisciplinary approach to client needs across a wide variety of industries – co-engineering solutions hand in hand with clients to develop new applications in sectors such as textile, steel, pulp, paper and plastic.

Highly valuing research and development in its quest to find cleaner and more efficient ways to burn gas while protecting the environment, the company partners with local universities to hire bright young engineers and invests nearly 10 per cent of its revenue annually in innovation.

As an example of its originality, the DUNGSHeatEngine is the company’s groundbreaking process heat technology with a heating capacity four times higher than existing machines – allowing the physical shrinkage of a burner while retaining a high density of flames.

The technology has had successful industrial applications, particularly in food production such as drying tobacco and roasting coffee, cacao and peanuts.

“One of our major targets is to explore different applications of our technologies by entering other industries needing our products and solutions,” Dungs says. “We plan five to 10 years ahead. At the moment, we’re looking at what we will be doing in 2028, and closely observe megatrends. We feel very confident in our future success and security.”
