B/F Macau Yat Yuen Centre, 525 Hennessy Road, Causeway Bay
Tel: 2574 8222
Open: 11.30am-11.30pm (Friday and Saturday until midnight)
Cuisine: tonkatsu, other fried dishes
Price: about HK$200 without drinks or service charge.
Ambience: we've been to other branches of this chain and they were busier, with tables closer together. This branch was quiet and we were given a comfortable, large table in a small alcove. There's a large open kitchen where chefs prepare the dishes. The menu is more extensive than at other branches, offering not only breaded, fried dishes and some sushi and sashimi but also kushiyaki (grilled skewers of meats and vegetables) and kushiage (grilled fried skewers).
Pros: service was friendly and a waiter came around frequently with refills of the shredded cabbage traditionally served with tonkatsu.
Cons: we tried a dish from the kushiage section - the shrimp and perilla rolls (HK$22 each) were oily and the shrimp didn't taste fresh.
Recommended dishes: the kushiyaki beef tongue skewer (H$35) had tender, thick pieces of meat, while the minced chicken skewer (HK$20) was well-seasoned and served with a dipping sauce that included raw egg yolk. My guest chose the hire katsu (fillet) Kurobuta pork curry (HK$148). The pork was coated in light, delicately crunchy breadcrumbs, and the mild curry sauce, too sweet on its own, complemented the meat. I had the Kinboshi pork, which, according to the menu, is healthy because it has 1.4 times more vitamin B1 than ordinary pork. It also said the meat was 'tender and juicy'. Served as the rosu katsu (pork loin) set (HK$188), the meat, which had a layer of fat along one side, was moist and delicious with house-made tonkatsu sauce.
What else? Other branches are in Central (tel: 2295 1112), Tsim Sha Tsui (tel: 3122 4128) and Sha Tin (tel: 2609 2180).
